Both the U.S. and the U.K., have accused Iran of supporting groups with in Iraq that have attacked coalition troops in the past. It is also well known that Iran gives economic and military support in the form of weapons to Hezbolla in Lebanon. It has also provided economic support to Hamas of the Palestinian Authority. Could this be a retaliation in kind by the U.S., against Iran using similar methods?
